Alberta Zero Emissions Truck Electrification Collaboration (AZETEC) is an industry-led project to reduce emissions from Alberta’s heavy-duty freight transportation sector by harnessing the benefits of hydrogen fuel cell electric powered drive trains. AZETEC is also an important step toward developing a low-carbon, ‘made-in-Canada’ hydrogen economy.
The $15 million, three-year project is led by the Alberta Motor Transport Association and funded through Emissions Reduction Alberta’s BEST Challenge. Two hydrogen fuel cell electric, 64-tonne, B-train tractor-trailers will be designed, built and move freight year-round between Edmonton and Calgary, starting in July 2021.
The two trucks will be the first hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles of this size and capacity built and tested in the world. The AZETEC project will demonstrate the importance of guiding innovation to fit with the unique demands of freight transportation in Canada, such as heavy weights, long distances and cold weather. The pilot project will determine whether this technology is credible from technical, economic and social perspectives.
